Journey into the heart of the Slovenian beer brewing
In just one hour on the way from Ljubljana to the heart of Slovenian beer brewing, one may contemplate all of Slovenia’s diversity and beauty. From urban architecture to the silence and tranquillity of the Zasavje region mountains, the immense green and plains of the Šalek Valley, where Slovenian hops grow. This is followed by a short journey through the third largest Slovenian city, Celje, on a path trapped between mountains, where the Savinja river carved its riverbed.
The legendary Slovenian Pivovarna Laško brewery
The land of immense green nature has been hiding the birthplace of the first and largest Slovenian brewery – Pivovarna Laško – since 1825. Its products have always personified a tradition of top quality, made possible by the clear mountain water, an excellent local hops variety, carefully selected barley, the latest technology and most importantly, the unwavering love for beer. The most legendary of them all is the Laško Zlatorog beer, with its typical flavour given to it by a decades old recipe. This very beer helped write the story about the legendary Slovenian beer, which shows its strong character time and time again.
Visit of Žalec, the hops capital of Slovenia
Institute for Beer Brewing and Hop Growing of Žalec
With its expert, research, educational and counselling services, the institute contributes significantly to the development of the Slovenian hop growing and other agricultural activities. It is one of only three such professional establishments in the world, founded in 1952. A team of experts provides sound foundations for future generations of Slovenian agriculture and hop growing with great commitment, excitement and sincere love. Their main task in the area of researching hops is to improve varieties of hops which are adapted to the local environment. The team will offer a few samples to visitors of the EBC convention as a gift.
European attraction – Green Gold Fountain
When visiting Žalec, the centre of the lower Savinja Valley, a view opens up to the unique tourist attraction, the first beer fountain in Europe. The Green Gold Fountain is designed as hop umbels in two semi-circles, fountains: a beer fountain and a water fountain. A unique idea, a history of hop-growing tradition and technological perfection of beer pouring is what attracts visitors. Visitors can purchase a special micro-chipped beer mug and pour a beer of their choosing. The beer mug was designed by the world-renowned designer Oskar Kogoj and may be taken home. The beer fountain only offers beer containing quality Slovenian hops from the Savinja Valley.
